University of Bristol Spelæological Society
Membership of the UBSS is open to students of the University of Bristol, university staff and alumini who were members as students. Its objectives, as stated in its Constitution, are primarily the discovery, exploration and study of caves and their contents, and then the study of archaeology, relating especially to caving areas. They include the maintenance of a museum and library and publication - in the public domain - of scholarship relating to the above, by members and collaborators. In addition, and in order to achieve these aims, we are very much involved in training our new members to be safe and competent cavers and, above all, to enjoy their trips underground. This website outlines much of what we do and how we do it.
Members living in Bristol usually meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 8.30pm. Where we meet is liable to be organised at short notice - pubs are like that these days - but should be announced on our WhatsApp group, so new members should join this as soon as they may. The Tuesday meet is is the place to come if you want to find out more about caving or the UBSS, or you want to come on any trips. Many informal trips are only organised in the pub, so if you want to cave you need to come along. Large, club organised, events, which usually happen every fortnight during term time, will be listed on the events diary page, and emails about them will be sent out nearer the time. If you are new to caving have a look at the fresher’s guide.
