The UBSS is fortunate in having access to grant aid to assist its members. Two sources of cash which can be used to help us in going caving, researching caves, etc. are only available to us.
The Oliver Lloyd Memorial Fund
The Oliver Lloyd Memorial Fund (OCLF) was set up by our then President Professor Bob Savage in memory of
Oliver Lloyd the Society’s long-standing and remarkably eccentric Treasurer, who died in 1985. The fund is independent and is managed by Trustees, all of whom are members of the Society. The OCLF is able to fund all aspects of the Society’s activities and has now paid out many thousands of pounds in support of everything from scientific research in the Museum, to replacing caving kit, to supporting social events, to painting the Hut.
It can only do this thanks to the remarkable generosity shown by our alumni membership who continue to support it with regular pledges, one-off gifts and bequests. To all these wonderful people we are and will continue to be extremely grateful.
Anyone who is interesting in supporting the OCLF should contact our vice-President (and OCLF Trustee) Linda Wilson.
Anyone wishing to apply for its support for a specific project should download the application form (link below) and email it to the Trustees.
The Tratman Fund
The Tratman Fund is a University of Bristol fund which was set up in 1979 using money bequeathed by our long-standing President
E.K. Tratman. One of its purposes is to assist members, especially student members, with overseas travel fort caving activities that include speleology or cave archaeology amongst their aims. In life, Trat, as he was universally known, was remarkably generous in helping students, especially those participating in
Irish expeditions, who would find their travel, accommodation and even their Guinness being paid for out of his pocket. Successful applicants would be expected to produce documentary output on return from their trip for one or more of the UBSS website,
Proceedings and
Newsletter. Enquires and applications should be made by downloading the application form (link below) and
emailing it to this address.
Both of these funds use the same application form which can be downloaded from here. If applying for both grants, only one copy need be completed. Please understand that being awarded funding is not guaranteed and that funding decisions will be made solely based on the information received on these forms.
