The Uphill Quarry is in the Carboniferous Limestone at the western end of the Mendip Hills. Since the early 19th century a number of caves and fissures were discovered and destroyed in the process of working the quarry, which is now derelict. A full account of the discoveries at Uphill has never been published and many of the misconceptions which exist about the site are due to this fact. This paper brings together information from archaeological and other sources to describe the sequence of the discoveries. The caves have been numbered serially in the order of their discovery in the hope that this will simplify references to the site in the future. All the stone artefacts that can be traced are described and illustrated in many cases for the first time. They comprise Middle and Early Upper Palaeolithic implements Other material from the sites is mentioned and, where known, its whereabouts.
