UBSS Museum Collection

The Society has been involved in a number of active archaeological digs, mostly in caves, on Mendip in south Gloucestershire, and in the Wye Valley. Some of these have yielded material of national and international significance. Sadly, much was lost when the Museum was bombed in 1940, but much still remains. This material continues to be studied and is also still added to from time to time.

Visits to the Museum and access to the Museum collections can be made on application to the Hon Curator, Linda Wilson who is always happy to receive visitors and to help with queries about specific aspects of the collection.

Statement on charges for access to museum collections by researchers

The Society welcomes the statement on this matter by the Prehistoric Society in March 2015, with which we are completely in agreement. We cannot envisage many, if any, scenarios in which we would charge researchers for access to our collections. They only exist to be studied.

Most of our catalogues are in paper form, but as they are computerised they will be made available here. As there is, as yet, no formal recognised standard for online catalogues, these are presented simply as spreadsheet files which may be opened as the user sees fit or as PDF scans of the original paper catalogues. Other, more interactive, formats will be added as time and the material allows.

The UBSS cataloguing system is outlined in this document.
